Persons with Disabilities and the March for Women’s Lives

The March office will be making trolley arrangements for people with mobility issues. We have just received word that their deadline for ordering the trolleys is Friday, March 26. Email your request.

Motor Coach travel
If you are planning to travel to Washington, DC via bus it will be necessary to inform the Bus Bank, or the charter company you working with, that there will be a person(s) in need of an ADA equipped bus. It is important to make this request early as most companies do not own ADA equipped coaches, they will have to be located.

Metro Rail Stations
General accessibility features include:
· All bus and train operators and station managers receive training on the special needs of people with disabilities
· Metro operates 165 elevators at its Metrorail stations
· All elevators have video cameras and emergency intercoms
· Metro Mobility Link provides information on elevators out of service, or information helpful for people with disabilities
· Elevator service status is available online

For the blind or low vision person:
· There are Braille signs throughout Metrorail stations
· Upgrades on voice enunciators at elevators
· External PA systems identifying the stops
· On board announcements identify the stops
· Door chimes and audio messages signal the opening and closing of the rail car doors
· Bright flashing lights announce a train is approaching

For the mobility-impaired person
· One fare card vendor per mezzanine, the first one on the left is lower
· Each mezzanine has at least one entrance and exit gate wide enough for a wheelchair.
· Lift-equipped and kneeling buses make up more that 70 percent of the fleet

For the deaf and hard of hearing person
· Flashing lights at the platform edge signal the arrival of trains
· Text telephones (TTY’s) are in every Metro station
· Metro’s consumer and transit information lines include TTY service

The National Mall
Traveling from any Metro station in the vicinity of the Mall to the event site could require everyone to walk or wheel distances ½ a mile or more, depending on which station you exit. If this is a concern, we recommend exiting at the closest station to the event site: the blue/orange line at Smithsonian. All sidewalks in the area have curb cuts for wheel chairs. Metropolitan Police will have officers at major intersections to assist with direction of pedestrian traffic. The Mall is mostly grass but has two wide gravel promenades on either side that can accommodate wheel chair traffic.
